Harmony Korine

this man is Harmony Korine he is an american film director, producer, screen writer and Arther, he has done films suck as kids, gummo, julien donkey-boy and mister lonely and his latest film is trash humpers.
if you have not seen any of his films then it is hard to explain them.... some would call them strange, odd or disturbing in some cases. i just love the way he films, for instance julien donkey-boy has very little script yet you still know what is going on, but at the same time the film doesn't really have a point which really intrigues me about the film.... the style in which it is filmed, almost none professional looking just really attracts me to it as well.
in kids the story line is very shocking and to the point, again the way it is filmed and just how true and real he can make serious things seem- it is about HIV and how easily it can be given, it is given around a group of friends, sounds shocking but the way it has been done is very clever.
the man intrigues me a lot, i have yet to see all of his films but I'm sure they will be just as interesting.

Quentin Tarantino

obviously everyone knows who Quentin Tarantino is, cant not appreciate his films really, the way pulp fiction was filmed in an almost non-sencical order is just genius again i grips you to the film and makes you want to watch it. i just really like films that are based in the olden times and quentins film are, death proof is a violent film but the way he films it and the story line it just works. inglorious bastards, the way he films it with almost like theatre breaks or old film written scripts every now and again just tops the film off. very clever director

Shane Meadows

this is Shane Meadows is a film director, screen writer and an occasional actor, who has done such films as dead mans shoes, a room for romeo brass, this is England and somers town. again i just really like his old style of filming, the way this is England was filmed is just really well done, the not perfect filming but it almost makes you feel you are there, the story line is brilliant and it really grips you to the film as it goes on. he is another director i am fond of.

interactive narative

for my final idea i decided to use the photography as i thought up the best scenarios for this idea and i thought it might work well
i drew out a diagram to help me see the efficiency of the photos and were to put what.

  • do you want this person to take a picture of you- yes or no? (numbed slide one)
  • yes, he asks which button to press- you are given a choice left or right button? (numbed slide 2)
  • left button, deletes all your photos (numbed slide 3)

  • no, to the first person ask this person- yes or no? (numbed slide 5)
  • no- leave without a photo taken (numbed slide 14)

  • yes, to the second person- keep the photo or ask to take another one? (numbed slide 6)
  • ask to take another one, person run off with camera- chase or report to police? (numbed slide 11)
  • report to police- camera found (numbed slide 13)
  • chase- don't catch him and he gets away with camera (numbed slide 12)

  • keep photo, this is the photo (numbed slide 7)
  • use this photo in uni project- yes or no? (numbed slide 8)
  • no- back to beginning page

  • yes, get a good grade- happy with grade or want more? (numbed slide 9)
  • happy with grade- back to beginning page
  • want more- goes up on wall in gallery (numbed slide 10)
i numbed the slides to help me with the coding of the linked pages, i wrote out the codes to which slide i had numbed to make the process a lot easier.

  1. red button- slide 5, green button- slide 2
  2. green button left- slide 4, green button right- slide 3
  3. red button- back to slide 1
  4. red button- back to slide 1
  5. red button- slide 14, green button slide 6
  6. green button left- slide 7, green button right- slide 11
  7. red button- back to slide 1, green button slide 8
  8. green button- slide 9
  9. green button left- back to slide 1, green button right- slide 10
  10. finish
  11. green button left- slide 12, green button right- slide 13
  12. red button- back to slide 1
  13. red button- back to slide 1
  14. red button- back to slide 1

i am happy with how it turned out i found flash really hard to use and i would prefer to have proper workshops on just the individual programs so that we can get to learn them better.
the reason why i used buttons on this project is because i felt the buttons looked a lot like camera buttons so i didn't want to hid them seeing as the film is predominately about the camera.

*for some reason the video hasn't worked and it was working before i uploaded it up on here, a few people have said flash hasn't been working for theirs and i assume that that is the case but i think something has happened to the codes in mine, i haven't got flash.*

interactive narrative ideas

i struggled to find examples of interactive narrative that weren't on the example list given but i had quite a few ideas of what i wanted to do in my head, i didn't realise until i tried to put them on paper that it was a lot harder, thinking up a different story lines that link well.
i just wanted mine to be a bit different than the standard thing and idea of fighting with different outcomes.
i originally wanted to mix in drawing with my pictures in some way but i wasn't sure how.

my first set of idea that were in my head and i thought that would work well

  • person asking for charity money
jist of the story was that you thank them for putting money in if you didn't they'd ask for it back, but i didn't think it was that strong enough.
  • photography
ask some one to take a picture of you and follow different things happen one person is bad and one works out.
  • trying on cloths for an event party or date
i wanted it to be a load of different cloths and depending on what combination depended on how the date went or the party went.
  • late for something how they would get there
different type of travel and different things going wrong along the way unless you chose the right pathway.
  • party, drug taking and drinking and what goes on
person taking different types of drugs and different side ffects.... basically a campaign for not taking drugs, they would all end bad.
  • skateboarding
chose which tricks to do in sequence in a competition and certain way wins some get you to second and some fail.

i followed a few ideas through

  • goes to a house party around the corner or go to town on three pounds
  • three pounds isn't enough to go any were in town
  • house party, you don't know what to wear jumper or t-shirt
  • jumpers is to hot in the house take it off or leave it on
  • take it off t-shirt has a hole under the arm
  • take jumper off put it down and it gets stolen
  • leave it on go outside or stay inside
  • stay inside someone spills drink on you and it gets dirty
  • go outside and cool off, 10 pounds on the floor take it or leave it
  • leave it, stay in house party most people go to town and its rubbish
  • take it go to town after all
if you can understand the colour coding you will understand the links between them, i just wasn't 100percent sure on this idea.
i also followed the charity idea through but decided there wasn't enough things to happened or scenarios that would work so i dismissed that after trying to make a spider diagram.

One shot Final Film

We started off by again deciding the basic storyline and what the main idea would be. we quickly decided after a few ideas had been thrown around that we would do a scene again using the camera as a person and the story line was he had an essay to do and his flatmates kept interrupting him because they wanted him t go out.
as a group we decided were we would film and who did what, i was a bit disjointed that we couldn't all have a go at filming but i understood that the way we wanted to do it that would have been impossible especially as its a one shot film as well.
i really also didn't want to be in it but as it was a group task i offered myself anyway.

we wrote down a pointers list as to what order things would happen and then gave one to each person in the film so they knew what was going on and when, when it was being filmed... that made it all easier.

  • looking at screen (computer)
  • title for essay
  • flickering through book
  • starts typing sentence
  • cancels it out
  • looks at book again (looks at clock)
  • (music starts playing before looks at book)
  • one person comes in hold door
  • asks him to come out
  • tells him he has an essay to do
  • boy leaves room
  • (still hear chatter and music)
  • back to computer screen
  • starts typing
  • gets message alert from same boy who asked him to come out
  • looks back at clock
  • msn beeps up
  • looks at phone, phone rings + text alerts
  • about to start typing again
  • couple of people barge in (more drunk)
  • ask him about going out again and to come and do shots
  • they shut his laptop
  • after they go out he looks at clock
  • group come in with a bottle and a shot for him
  • someone is sick
  • looks at everyone
  • takes the bottle off a boy and has a drink, as in 'stuff it il go out'
when i have uploaded the video you can clearly see the changes made when we were actually filming it it became apparent certain things worked better in different ways.
the main thing that we originally wanted to do was to speed up the clock every time he looked at it, we found that editing it would be to hard, and trying to change it in between clips would also be to hard due to the noise it made and trying to get someone to change it in such a Short space of time.
we also left out a few things to help us fit more to the time limit. it took about 12 takes.

the main thing i did in the group was write everything down and then also be in the video, and i was the organiser for when people went into the room and out of the room during filming. i said before i would have loved to do more the filming side of it.

the video was OK just wasn't my cup of tea really, i would have liked to do something really quirky and different if it wasn't a group project. the idea for the voices inside the head was one of mine which i had got from one of the videos i had researched and i think it works well and helps the viewer engage with what is going on and what the person is actually thinking, as if you were them.

One Shot Film- Test Film

in our groups we had to first write a short story and we were given Si-fi as our gender to write about. as a hole we struggled at this as a task and didn't/ could not do it in such a short space of time which made me think this project might not go well.

but....
when we started planning for are test shot film, we sort of clicked straight way and came up with a simple but effective idea. we chose to use the camera as someones sight from there point of view, story line was based around someone at a vending machine and it doesn't work.

rough script
  • looks at item
  • gets money- counts change
  • doesn't have enough money
  • looks around
  • turns to some people asks for change
  • person puts money in his hand
  • puts money in vendor
  • no drink
  • out of order
this is the video we came up with after a few takes and i like how it turned out, simple story line and simple idea which has turned out quit well

Group project- One Shot Film

we had to create a one shot short film which is about a few minutes long, the hard bit about the project is that we were limited to how we used the camera as it was not aloud to be moved for its position on the tripod. this made the planning process a lot hard as thinking of ideas were the camera can not move from the tripod, meaning that we had to pick a space carefully as we could only use the place immediately around the tripod.

i looked at a few short clip films, but none of them were using a stationary camera.

although this isn't really a film and goes on for much longer than we are aloud i just really liked the style of it, the blurriness and in and out of focus really draws me in and i just really like the way it added drama to the clip, also the music which has been added and the clips other sounds i feel have been done really well.

again this clip is very similar to the clip about but the way the focus is used and the way the clip and been made to look old-e-fied.

i thought this was a brilliant short story film, the story line i think is really clever and keeps you wanting to watch it, which i think is very hard to do on a short film. if you loose the view concentration because it is so short there is no getting it back.
the music is used really well and i thought the way the voice overs were used over the clips added a real sense of him thinking in his head. i am also a great fan of black and white filming really focuses thought onto the film and personally i prefer it.

i looked at a few other short films and they all gave me some of my own possible ideas.....

i started thinking about the not being able to move the tripod, and thought of some way which i could be clever with the use of it.

  • possibly using it out of a window or off the top of a building so that you could have a huge scene.
  • using the camera as a person from their point of view.
  • corner of a road, getting a few different directions creating a lot of space.
  • using a car and having the tripod in it.
other idea which came to mid were possibly reversing bits of the video to add a bit of a different affect 'rewinding'

the idea i wanted to do was use the camera as a person form there point of view, the person would be on a road looking at a bus stop with a tramp and a person sitting on it. the main jist is that the person is tripping out, dizzy and confused, i would use blur, focus and camera skills to make it look more realistic. he spins around cars go past on one side of the road and the camera turns quickly to flow it, he looks up and down roads, looks to the sky then looks back to the woman sat at the bus stop. she is distressed trying to tell him something but in his dizziness and confusion he cant work out what she is on about then turns to his left and there is a car speeding towards him and then when the car gets close enough the clip blanks out.
